Турецкая делегация в среду, 8 августа, в ходе переговоров в Вашингтоне
с первым заместителем госсекретаря США Джоном Салливаном отказалась идти на уступки и давать обещания освободить американского пастора Эндрю Брансона, арестованного в Турции по обвинению в шпионаже и связях с террористами. Об этом со ссылкой на свои источники ранее сообщило агентство Bloomberg.
По его данным, делегация Турции в ходе встречи выразила озабоченность в связи с ситуацией с турецким банком Halkbank, в отношении которого проводится расследование по подозрению в нарушении санкций США против Ирана. Однако представители США в ходе переговоров дали понять, что они не собираются обсуждать смягчение потенциальных мер в отношении Halkbank, пока Анкара не освободит Брансона. Представители Анкары со своей стороны не стали брать на себя какие-либо обязательства и заверять Вашингтон в том, что американский пастор будет освобожден.
В свою очередь, издание The Wall Street Journal со ссылкой на свои источник сообщает, что неудача в американо-турецких переговорах может привести к тому, что администрация Дональда Трампа примет новые «штрафные меры» в отношении Турции. Газета пишет, что наряду с усилиями по освобождению пастора Брансона, США работают над обеспечением освобождения для турецко-американского ученого НАСА Серкана Гёлге, который также был арестован в неудавшейся попытки переворота в Турции в июле 2016 года, и трех турецких граждан, которые работают американских посольствах в Турции.
